Blog Post New Entry

Non-East Indians

Posted by Lorna Pereira on June 8, 2010 at 4:49 AM

I want to know what our fellow members feel with regards to non-East Indians joining this site.

Dont the rules clearly mention the following:

Please note this is for members of the East Indian Community.

Anyone who requests to be a member to this site:

Explicitly accepts that he/she is an East Indian

Does not get deemed to be an East Indian, by virtue of being a member on this site.

This is purely for networking within the community and to be more recognisable to others.

So why is admin allowing non-East Indians to be members? Doesnt it defeat the purpose for this site? Personally I feel that this site should be exclusively for our East Indian Community.

At the end of 4 conditions ('rules' as stated by a member above ) required to be qualified to join this site, the admin clearly states "This is purely for networking within the community and to be more recognisable to others."
It's the second part of the sentence,...TO BE MORE RECOGNISABLE TO OTHERS...that perhaps gives the admin freedom to allow outsiders to join this site.
However is there any fool-proof method adopted to scrutinize a real east-indian as & when he/she is allowed to join us?

The reason I am bringing up this issue is because I came across a member who is not an EI nor is he Indian & non-Catholic too..These are exactly the kind of people who look for gullible Catholics & slowly convert them & totally brain-wash them into joining dangerous cults. Thats exactly why admin needs to screen such profiles before accpting them as members. We need to protect our community especially our youngsters. We dont need Bible preachers..we have our Catholic Church & our Parish priests whom we can approach to clear our doubts if we have any!!

Hello Lorna, the Western concept of the term "East Indian" refers to any individual who has his/her origins in India or the sub continent. This was coined inorder to distinguish the Indies - West Indies from the East Indies (thanks to Christopher Columbus!). To the rest of the world an idea that there exists a community called the East Indians, who are one of the original inhabitants of Bombay simply just does not exist! Given the age old misconception, it would be rather unwise to turn away outright someone who accidentally, intentionally or otherwise may have logged on to this site without first EDUCATING them about our origins.
That in essence would be an opportunity lost to promote our culture.

Dear Candida,
I don't think this post was made to offend anyone. As you said that people of rest of the world think the term "East Indian" refers to any individual who has his/her origins in India or the sub continent, and many become a member, BUT the title of the web page clearly reads "The East Indian Community Original Inhabitants of Bombay, Salsette & Thana."
So I don't think there should be any confusion.

Anyway no offence :)

Hi Candida..

I am very well aware of the global concept of what an East Indian might mean.

I dont have a problem with people who unintentionally came across this site & discovered about our community. I am more concerned about the ones who knowingly & intentionally ignore the pre-requisite request for only East Indians to become members. If someone has visited the homepage & bothered to read the details it gives you a pretty damn good picture about what the East Indian Community is all about. So I dont agree that someone might not be aware and would unintentionally become a member by mistake. Even if that was the case its as easy to remove your profile as it is to put it there in the first place.
There are plenty of networking sites like Facebook, Orkut etc. to find friends from all over the world. But can we please have just one site exclusively for our small little community called the East Indians...

Well, first of all there should be a debate on who/what one allows on this site....it is your site ...it is easy for us to disallow people based on our (administrators) thinking, but it is more wise to have people report of persons creating a problem.

As Greg put it clearly, how do we (administors) know that anyone is truly East Indian. Do we have any fool proof way of doing so. Please give suggestions and we will try to implement, if feasible.

WRT, no east Indians,
we also have the lady who is doing a documentary on East Indians, a being non catholic, got a lot of information, from the site and it's members. Thereby supporting Candida's logic of educating people.

in the interim, if there are person/s creating a nuisance, please feel free to report him/her.

yea so you have to prove it to them that you are an East Indian. you have to get signatures from people who are already proved East Indians and have the certificates proving that

Going through all the comments I wonder is there any way any body out of the community Not join ?? well on can join giving false details . We as East-Indians will have to be careful to trust any body completely without actually knowing { which is not possible on the net } the person , may be by some tricky question which on we East Indians would know .
