East Indians in business

Posted by Arun Dube on January 30, 2010 at 12:30 PM

I attended a conference of Christian businesspersons at Hotel Trident, Bombay on the 22nd and 23rd January 2010.The conference was organised by the ICCC and Dimensions, an association of Christian businesspersons, and there were about 400 delegates. I was disappointed to see only 3 or 4 East Indians there. Why are East Indians averse to entering the business arena? People of other communities come to Bombay and prosper but East Indians, who are the real sons of the soil, prefer to take up jobs and work for others. Why?

Someone has rightly said - "that we East-Indians are like Crabs, trying to pull down the one who is trying to find his way up to success". Dear East-Indian fellow bretheren of mine, if possible do guide and support the ones who are trying to find a strong foothold in business which will then flourish making our contribution to our homeland - Bombay - which will enable our other fellow East-Indians to follow the footsteps of our successful bretheren.
A strong urge to request to help others and always to remember that helping others won't go unnoticed but will be written in the book of GOLD and our LORD will definitely be there in our time of need.
Thanks and have a great day ahead.

There is a very active organisation of Christian businesspersons (both men and women) who are actively involved in helping Christian businesspersons grow. It was founded in 2006 and has held about 47 monthly meetings so far in Bombay. I attended the conference in January this year and was amazed at the networking among the members. I, by the way, am one of the founder members of the Jaipur chapter of Dimensions. I hope I won't be offending anyone when I mention that nobody asks whether a member is an East Indian, Goan, Mangalorean or from any other Christian community. All they ask is that you have to be a Christian and the members will go all out to help. I therefore request all the Christians who read this comment to let me know if they like this concept and I will put them in touch with the leaders of Dimensions. Think about it seriously and I assure you that you will be happy with the results. Please let me emphasise that there are no stings attached nor is there any hidden agenda. It is purely to help Christian businesspersons grow.

What is the meaning of business? I'm sure there are many East-Indians doing some kind of business, small or large. But, they may not attend a conference. There may be many reasons for not attending some of which can be time, money & travel involved. I think East-Indian business persons can have e-Conference (just a thought).

Any entrepreneur is a businessperson and he or she doesn't have to attend a conference in order to succeed. The purpose of the conference was to encourage networking among Christian businesspersons/entrepreneurs to help them expand their businesses. This has worked very well so I wanted to motivate other Christians to use this forum to increse their contacts and thus develop their business further.

There is a group of Christian businesspersons who have formed an organisation known as Dimensions, which is dedicated to helping Christians do well in business. It was co-founded by Mr. Freddy Mendonca, who lives in Mumbai. His mobile numbers are 9987052077 and 9320152052. An East Indian member is Mr. Gordon D'Souza, the editor of Christian Spotlight magazine. His mobile number is 9819628388. Please contact them and tell them that I have asked you to get in touch with them. They will give you all the information you require. Even after that if you still feel you want some more information, just contact me.

We EI have actually not been in the limelight except for a few ones, but my advice to all EI is to live a disciplined life, yes i forefathers had a easy life with not much challenges, there was apprecation in land value and the enjoyment is over for now as we EI have no other investments to fall back on. We cannot continue the same lifestyle, we need to rise up from the old easy life, yes we party a lot, and why should we not but let has reduce the alcohol that fllows during our parties, i bet you this will solve our more than half of our problems. i will advice that we should use all EI programmes to pass the message that alcohol is bad for health, the less we take the more the EI we will have on plannet EARTH.

Dear Arun.....It is good to hear about networking events set-up by Dimemsions. I am interested in finding out if there is a website where we can register and find out when the next event etc is Or do we need to contact the individuals you have mentioned in your post.
The reason I ask is that I am based in the UK and make trips back to India on Business so would like to make it to an event while i am there.

Hi Wilbur,
The website is www.dimensionsdirect.com. You can log on and register as a member online. You can then learn about all the activities and download the bulletins. There is also a section regarding the various business activities of the members and their names, addresses and contact numbers. You can then contact them directly, if you so wish. You could tie up with them so as to be able to meet them when you visit India. The members have a monthly meeting. The one in Mumbai is held in Bandra on the last Saturday of every month. If your visit coincides with the date of such a meeting, you could attend as a guest member. You will be able to get all the particulars from the website.
