EI Fitness - Staying Trim

Posted by Neil Misquitta on November 22, 2010 at 2:11 AM

The typical EI male has supreme levels of fitness and endurance...till he turns 30.

Most of us have been a part of football teams, track and field events in school, badminton etc at some point of time.

Outdoor games (catching kuk, seven tiles, dabba i spy, chain chain etc) actually kept us fit as kids.

Inspite of having calorie rich diets, the physical activity helped us keep in shape.

Once married and / or working, the trend is to sit back and enjoy your food, drink and make general merry. nothing wrong with this, however, along with our bank balances fattening, the layers along the waist add up too.

Heart ailments, diabetes, BP and other ailments creep up. Given todays tensions it all adds up to poor health and lower life expectancy.

In the recent past, I have known people succumbing to ailments at a young (or what was considered young) age.

The type of food we eat, daily as well as at functions, needs a whole lot of activity to burn off.

our ancestors, were almost daily engaged in physical activity that burned calories - in fields, factories walking around etc.

This is not the case with us. We need to change. in the case of my bretheren settled abroad, you are witness to the fitness levels of your foreign neighbours. They themselves are battling a generation of obesity.

We as a community need to encourage physical activity (Sports, social work whatever) to keep in shape.

Lets get going and do the best for our minds, bodies and overall fitness.

Dear Neil ,
You have broached a very good topic.Since we tend to slow down on our physical activities after 30 it's prudent to change our eating habits to suit this lifestyle. Today's work culture mostly involves deskwork,(thanks to information tech) Let us eat more fruits & veggies to promote good health . Your statement. ( "The type of food we eat, daily as well as at functions, needs a whole lot of activity to burn off." ).on extra activities to match the type of food we eat will not go well for the overburdened workforce. The stress should be on 80 % veggie to reduce various ailments.
Can you include this in your blog & submit.Please.

Better to eat fruit & veggies. But, most of us will not. Second option is to eat less of non-veg especially pork, beef and goat/lamb. Fish is OK. Other ideas include walking, trekking, swimming, doing house work (in NZ I vacuum the house and do lawn mowing), etc. Why not organise cricket/football games for 30+?
There should be a balance between what we eat & do. Do not only work, give time for yourself and for your family.
Also, drink alcohol to a limit. It is not only alcohol but also what & how much we eat while drinking alcohol is what matters.
