Recently the elections were held to elect a Sarpanch for the gaothans in Mumbai. I am not clear whether these elections for Sarpanch are held throughout Gaothans in Mumbai.
I was happy to know that at in most my neighbouring gaothans in Vile Parle these elections were held. But it made me sad that in my own gaothan no election was held because no one was found qualified to become a Sarpanch.
I am not clear about the qualification required to become a Sarpanch i.e whether the person should only be rich (who cares if he is not doing anything for our community) or, whether he should be pure East Indian breed (it does not matter if he does not knows to speak East Indian language), Or any Tom-Dick& Harry can stand for the post with some influence or just for the sake of standing and do nothing after getting elected.
I am also not clear as to what are the roles and responsibilities of a Sarpanch. Has any outgoing Sarpanch published the work he or she has done for the betterment of the Gaothans or the people of the Gaothans.
I would be happly if someone share their views on this topic and answer my queries.
Also I feel that since all this is being done for the good of the East Indian community, I request that there should be a special column on this site where all newly elected Sarpanch be displayed along with their details and the work done or will be done by them for the upliftment of the Gaothans and our community.

Hi Nigel!,
Was randomly browsing the internet for some lost and forgotten east indian dishes, and accidentally stumbled upon this site.
It is encouraging that EI being a minority caste among the catholic popluation in Mumbai, is still alive and hopeful that with this website, the east indian community, wishes to find its place in this modern world too, which is good news for us.
As per your queries about the qualifications of a Sarpanch and the duties he has to perform, i do recall a friend of mine who i met some time back, who lives in santacruz, and was my school classmate. That was last year(2010), when this friend told me that he was the Sarpanch of Gaothans in Mumbai....His name is Alphi D'souza.
Hope when i meet him again, I'll take his telephone no.if you wish to contact him for further information.
You may write in to me at the email Id i have registered on this site, so that we can maintain further contact.
