Every civilization, every country, every language has a history, so too the East Indian dialect has it’s history which is more than 500 years old. With the changing of times, East Indian language is being forgotten and many fear that that soon the language will be a thing of history.

In order to preserve the East Indian language and culture, an attempt is being made to compile traditional and devout religious hymns that have been instrumental in sustaining our faith.

Mr. Alphonso Tao mooted the concept of producing Cassettes/CD’s of the same. A committee was formed under the Spiritual Directorship of Rev. Fr. Simon Borges, Dean, Kurla Deanery. Valuable inputs were provided by Fr. Daryl D’Souza. The most traditional and theological East Indian Hymns were selected. Care was taken to maintain its originality in terms of words, tunes and dialect. An attractive hymn booklet was printed to enable the faithful to sing these hymns in the proper context. 25 of the top East Indian singers hailing from Mumbai, Vasai and Thane sung the devout hymns which were set to proper tunes and appropriate background music by recordist Mr. Roney G. from Wadala at Myron Studio.

On 30th August, the first day of the novena service in preparation of the Nativity of our blessed mother, ‘East Indian Bhavratachi Gaani” was released by his Eminence Simon Cardinal Pimenta, Archbishop of Bombay, Emeritus who was welcomed by Mr. Wilfred Pereira, Convener. In his speech his Eminence referred to once mother tongue as a “mother”. He exhorted the faithful to take pride in speaking the East Indian language and praised and complimented the Committee headed by Fr. Simon Borges, Dean, Kurla Deanery for undertaking the venture in order to preserve our cultural heritage.

Fr. Simon Borges in his speech whilst offering his gratitude for the Committee members and for all those who helped in producing the Cassette/ CD, hoped that these Hymns will be sung with utmost piety and this rich legacy of the Christian faith and culture handed to us by our forefathers of praising God, our beloved Mother and invocation of the Saints through the medium of these devout and devotional hymns are passed from generation to generation. He mentioned that soon we will undertake one more venture of producing a CD based on the great booklet “Christpuran” written more than 350 years in chaste East Indian language.

In his thanksgiving address, Adv. Vivian D’Souza, Secretary, stated that making of this Cassette/ CD was a joyous and a enlightening spiritual journey and that the product was one of love and sacrifice as neither the renowned singers nor the recordist asked for any remuneration for their services and hoped that this CD/Cassette and Hymn booklet will find place of pride in every East Indian household both at home and overseas where members of the community have migrated.

This venture has proved to very popular and the Cassettes/CD’s along with an attractive hymn booklet, priced reasonably at Rs.40 and Rs.50 were an instant sellout.
